Lip Sync

To decide who would suit our artist the most we all recorded ourselves lip syncing some of the lyrics, this gave us an idea who would fit the genre better, and who's look suited the style of voice the most. From the video we decided that Aaron looked best and so we chose him to be our artist. We wanted our video to look as authentic as possible and so we wanted our artist to really suit the voice and genre of the song. We believe that Aaron is the most suited to the Indie/Hipster genre as this is how he dresses and the type of music he enjoys listening to. Below is the video of our lip sync practice.

Song Choice

We have chosen EDEN, Rock and Roll for our song. Rock and Roll is a song that is a small, unknown song my many but yet a hit along with the indie community. This song expresses EDEN's life through lyrics and visuals. With this music we feel like we can express a form of narrative through types of shots we can use and variety of locations that we can play around with that are close by. The popularity and no music video makes it applicable when it comes to choosing a song and the drop of the heavy guitar riffs made us fall in love with the song. Aaron will be able to lip sync to this fairly easily due to the slow pace and the lyrics are not technically hard to pronounce. Secondly, the whole general voice and style suits Aaron, making him fit the his musician and actor, making this perfect for our media project.

Website Ideas

Tour Poster Constructive Criticism

As soon as we printed off our first tour poster draft out, we showed the peers around us in our class our poster and how could we improve it among first impressions.

Firstly, straight away people recognised that our poster said "european tour" even though we only had tour dates in the UK. We realised straight away that this was stupid and changing this will be pretty straight forward and that will make our poster much more realistic and less misleading for potential followers in foreign countries.
Secondly, people really didn't like the way how theres was an odd amount of title dates, which made it look asymetric and fairly unprofessional. So therefore we removed the Exeter tour date and brought the Album text over to the left . This has made this less compact and the minimal text is good for an advertisement because no one wants to read bulky text in a poster.

Tour Poster First Draft

This is the first draft of our Tour Poster, which was, once again, created on Adobe Photoshop. We liked the simplistic look of the burnt up 10 pound notes, and we feel it really suited our 'edgy' and 'grungy' feel that comes with our video. We also added our logo to improve the cross-media synergy as people will take one look at the logo and quickly identify that is our tour poster. Additionally we used the Besom font that we use throughout our designs, for both the digi pak and the website, which further utilises cross-media synergy, which allows people to quickly identify who's poster it is. Lastly we decided to stick with the black and white theme that is included in all of our products, other than the magazine cover. This is a colour scheme that we have included throughout our project, even in the clothes that our artists wears in the video. This helps us establish a dark and indie feel for our artist and products, but it also makes our products unique and distinguishable from any others.

Tour Poster Inspiration

Myself and Harrison found this tour poster as I have listened to Bastille in the past and we could use a similar layout as this poster as this would suit our artist. However the image will be replaced of either a shot in our music video or a photo that either has the artist in the image or a location used for filming. This simplicity of this really suits our style that we are going for. 

Secondly, I like how there is a picture at the top and text and tour dates on the bottom. We can use a picture that symbolises us just like a picture in this text that will represent us and the genre that we are going for. Then below we can use our Besom font which we have used throughout, this a good way of using cross media synergy which we have utilised.

Magazine First Draft Comparison Compared

For first drafts, replicating magazine covers does not come closer than this. How did we get it so close?

To get it so close, we folded two layers on top of each other on Adobe Photoshop. Doing this we then lowered the opacity on the official magazine cover, this helped us in making it as accurate as possible. Ensuring all text and everything is in the right place.

First Draft of Magazine Cover

I created the magazine in Adobe Photoshop once again and this is my first draft. I tried to make the magazine look as close to the Clash magazine we used for inspiration as possible. However after reviewing the first draft I found a few issues, I then printed the cover and asked people to give me some feedback on what to improve.

Magazine Inspiration

we have decided to use this magazine front cover as our inspiration. Firstly we chose this music magazine because we like the simplicity of the cover. The White bold title over the yellow cover is bold and this i feel is a way of diverting attention to the artist on the front cover and the contents around the side which will entice customers to buy this magazine. I like the portrait of the artist because people will see this magazine and they will wonder who the artist is if they do not recognise them, at this stage the text may encourage people to buy this product. Meaning that this magazine is good for developing an artists image. This is good for our image because not many people will know who iuris' is, so this style of magazine would be very useful in what we are trying to create. hopefully this will convey our indie style as well as i hope it will, accurately matching this title cover.

Reflection on the first steps of the Instagram site

With the creation of the Instagram page, i have tried to go down a route where Iuris is presenting himself to the public as an indie artist. The 6 posts that have been published so far all have captions that have lyrics from the new song that we are creating, the hit track 'Rock and roll' by EDEN.
To start off with, i have tried to create some diversity with the posts that i have created to start off with. I do not want to have the same old posts that people will get bored with. This includes different shot styles and locations.
To make this better i feel like we should include more posts and use marketing techniques to talk about my brand and upcoming tour dates etc. This would help to develop my brand image, posting on social media platforms help small artists to develop so this is a route we should consider. Secondly, i think we should consider a photography route like the photo like the bike. The camera work and photography of abstract objects, providing metaphoric captions would help to develop our 'indie' character.
Social media is a way of expressing our brand and this process is experienced by the whole world, meaning our social media accounts should be packed with content in order for people to bump across us.

Instagram for iuris

We have created an Instagram page for our artist to further add to our cross-media synergy, we have uploaded some of the best photos from our photo shoots. This will allow to keep our fans updated and so they can connect with our artist on a personal level and get a feel for what it is like to be iuris.

Response to Digipak first draft

I finished the first draft of the digipack. We wanted to start to create the digipack because we want to include this into our music video as a form of cross media synergy. In addition, we also have an idea about a graphic match with a printed out copy of our digipack, we could try and include this into our video. For example, there will be a close up of the digipack and then a transition into the location of the picture in the close up shown.

What went well?
I found a good way to adopt an indie theme that revolves around our music video. With inspiration from Bon Iver, we have created some sketches that revolves around the six pictures of our digipack. I feel I have done a really good job executing this and I feel I am the best for this role because he knows how to use Photoshop, the form of software that we are using.
I really like the black and white theme around the digipack but there is still colour added in the
middle. Black and white on its own could be visually boring to look at, so this spruce of colour provides that diversity that we were trying to look for. We have tried to create cross-media synergy with everything we have done, this includes keeping a black and white theme with merchandise website theme and font for example.

For first drafts i feel that this a really good, the one thing i would improve is making the centre spine more prominent, this is important because this will be where the CD is, so this needs to be standing out from the rest. However, it still needs to be in context otherwise it will not match or fit with the others very well.

Reverse shot research

Our inspiration for our rewinding shot idea with the cd cases come from this music video. This music video is all shot in reverse, this makes it interesting because it adds unpredictability and the shot of things rewinding looks visually beautiful. For example, reversing the cd covers end up looking like the cd covers are flying into Aaron's hand. This is very creative and it flows really well with the shots also captured in the drama studio. Secondly these shots provide a different location and style of lighting than we have been using throughout the video. This style of lighting goes in synergy with our black and white theme with our digipak, costume and website.

Response to constructive criticism

Constructive criticism from the group pitch
it was really successful and there some valuable feedback that we took that we can add. They spoke about adding our iuris sketch to our digipack, giving it extra effect and they also said it has a 'grungy' look about it. Linking this to the website they said the bright background of Aaron in front of the graffiti doesn't match our black and white theme. This is some useful criticism that we took are going to be helpful and we are going to include this and tweak this into our final designs.
We are now seeing some significant improvements to the website, we have been given feedback on how to make it better and we have seen other groups websites and we have taken note on how to improve ours. For example, we have found out how we can spice up the about wall and not leave it boring. In addition we are going to add the iuris sketches to the website, adding our indie touch to it.
Secondly, we are going to add a music and merchandise page to it, this will add quantity and develop our character even more.


Here is the response I have added to the website so far, I have added the iuris sketches to the background of our website, this goes with our black and white theme and it also represents our brand image considerably.

Digi Pak - First Draft

This is the first draft of our Digi Pak which I created in Adobe Photoshop. We got some feedback on our digi pak from our halfway evaluation, lots of people said they didn't understand why it said 'lies'. Originally we were going to incorporate this throughout our video, however we decided to change this, therefore to keep with the cross-media synergy I have decided to change all of the lies to designs of our logo, we feel this would be more relevant to our artist and would make more sense. This is how we have acted upon our feedback of the first draft of our digi pak.

Bed sheet transition research

When scrolling through music videos, looking for inspiration for our music video, we saw the transition using the curtains and bed sheet and same style and colour. We thought this looked beautiful due to the Artist 'The Weeknd' keeping in same frame through both shots and the transition looks so fluid.

Secondly, I liked the establishment at the start of the camera tracking the artists in the music video as if they had a camera brace on. If we could use that as a style of filler shot that would be a nice addition.

Costume Ideas

I have chosen different outfits to wear and I was inspired of clothing choice by searching through Eden's social media and similar artists to gain as much knowledge as what the artist I have created would choose to wear and what outfits would suit the music video as well as possible. We have chosen as a group that basic outfits with no labels will suit the artist the most as this is what Eden and the similar artists wear throughout social media.


This is a basic white t-shirt which I will use to film as this is worn by the similar artists, a plain white t-shirt with high rolled sleeves whilst wearing plain black jeans as this is what the similar artists and Eden have been wearing as researched.


Above are two images which will be one outfit which will be full denim separated by either a white t-shirt or a black t-shirt whilst still wearing the same shoes as the other white t-shirt and black jeans outfit.




Vans are worn by Eden and the similar artists so we thought wearing vans would be the best option of shoes to wear throughout the whole music video because these are worn by the similar artists so we decided to wear these vans throughout the whole music video.

Graphic match Research

In film, a match cut is a cut from one shot to another where the two shots are matched by the action or subject and subject matter. A graphic match creates a cut between two shots that juxtapose their graphically similar images.
Graphic matches were a common style of transition in the past. Here is an example:




Sometimes graphic matches can look really cheesy and poorly created but if professionally made the two shots will be shaped, angled and positioned in the frame correctly.

Our ideas for graphic matches
The first idea for our graphic match is to have a close of our front cover on the digi pak, we were going to use this image to graphic match into the scene of the location, we feel that this would be a cool idea and if framed correctly it will be such a smooth transition. This would be a form of cross media synergy as we are going to use our digi pak in our music video.

Another idea that we have is after our shot with the skate board and the powder paint, we are going to zoom into the skateboards wheel, creating an extreme close up, this close up will graphic match into another extreme close up of the artists eye. We thought this would be a good idea because we do not have many close ups and we thought this would be a cool way to cut the scene. However, we have lots of ideas and ways to cut and transition so we have to work out what types of transitions we should use, otherwise we will lose the novelty and the transitions will become negative.

Artist Logo Ideas (insert logo)

We asked Aaron to draw some rough ideas of what he wanted our logo to look like, we then asked everyone in our media class to chose 3 of their favorites. This allowed us to pick out the best parts of each design and create a logo for our artist. The final product is shown below, we took the idea of the reflection, as lots of people liked this.

We were originally going to choose the logo with the eyeball, however we feel it would make people think our name was iris, and associate us with an eye, when our name is iuris. Therefore we didn't chose this logo as it would be misleading.

Font Research

When I was creating our artists logo and digi pak want to have a suitable font that would work with our genre, that we could use throughout our products to promote cross-media synergy. Therefore I looked online for some fonts and came across the ones shown above. My favourite was Besom, as it has a very hand written feel to it, I feel this suits our genre very well as it is quite 'hipster' and very different to other fonts, much like our artist is different to all other artists. This also helps it fit with the indie/hipster genre of our music video.

Macklemore x Ryan Lewis - WINGS

As a group we found this music video and we chose to use this as inspiration of shots as without the music some shots are similar to our music video and could be used in our final music video. We also used this music video to see performance and the type of style Macklemore has in this music video.



This is the first scene that we could recreate using a different background as this establishes the artist and the type of clothing that the artists wears, therefore this could be interpreted into our music video if there is an outfit change.


This is a simple use of a depth of field shot with the artist in the background and this is a shot we could incorporate into our music video as this would work in our music video if for example, instead in a building use an area with nature whilst I am either on the floor or on a tree or I am inside a abandoned building instead.



This shot is a basic shot also using depth of field in the background, we will not use a basketball but this could be the scene using a vase to smash as this could be better with a blurred background rather than a clear background.

This is another depth of field shot but instead this is a far angle which could be used as quick cuts if along with the beat as each step could be a cut to the image below as this would match the beats and would be more interesting to add into the music video.

This is the image that will be in the same location whilst using quick cuts from this angle to the angle above to match each the change of beats.


This shot is a basic shot of showing the background and the artist and this could be used instead of in a room this could be used in a old building or in nature as this is the theme we are using throughout our music video.

Zoom Blur Research

This zoom blur transition is a good idea for a shot transition due to its qualities and how smooth it makes the transition. It starts by zooming into an object, you can either keep the image in shot first before you zoom out into another shot or not. This beautiful effect can be perfected on adobe after effects and it isn't that hard to create. What will be helpful is to follow the tutorial that is given in the video above. This video is a perfect form of research and it is a step by step guide in showing you how to create this type of transition. I am researching a lot about transitions because i feel that is what makes music videos, the editing is one of the most important factors so having slick transitions is key to success.
One way how we could include this into our music video is by having Aaron, actor in frame and then suddenly having a close up of him with the zoom and then with the zoom out we could use that transition to change location to reduce the abruptness of the cut. This would look very professional if we manage to make it correctly.

Another way we could use this transition is this could be the bridge to gap the graphic match that we are planning to create with our digipack. This would be a really good way of performing our graphic match in the smoothest way possible. And if executed correctly, would visually look amazing.

Film burn - light effect

Laying this lighting effect over our music video might be a nice and unique way to transition by using lighting.
My idea with using this type of lighting would be in abandoned areas. There could a close up of rusty nails and we could transition by using this film burn effect. This synergy match of colours and using this to transition would look very creative and it would carry on with our indie styled theme.

Pass by transition - Transition research

This type of transition looks really hard to pull off but i think it would be a really nice transition to use. We have three people in our group, this is good because i could be the guy who walks past Aaron and we could use this to transition into the next shot.

The other example we could use this style of transition is by using a tree in a forest to transition Aaron into another scene. Aaron could walk past a tree and this slight pan could shift locations to somewhere else. If we frame it correctly etc, that could be a really successful transition. Perhaps it could be the bridge from being in the countryside to transitioning into the city or abandoned area.

Transition Shot Style Research

Whip pans 
This shot that we have used in our music video is called a whip pan, this is created by panning to the side fast and in the first shot, in the second shot the pan is carried on but the location would have changed. I feel that this is awesome to use and it goes well with our thought beat plan with the footsteps at the start of our music video. Here is an example video on YouTube that shows whip pans, we may include something like this in our music video because this goes with our nature sort of theme and it looks artsy and creative. What i like the most about it is it can connect any two scenes together so well, it reduces the sharpness of a cut you can get in music videos. This would be a good way to change locations or outfit.

Using white to transition

This effect is simple to use, only needing a dip to colour effect on your editing software. We have included this in our music video by using a match on action sort of style transition. Where we zoom into Aaron's white top in one location and then zoom out into another location. It flows really well and the white works much better than black because the white straight away fades into the light once the camera zooms out of the t shirt.
