Voyeurism - Erotic pleasure can be gained from looking at something sexual.

Male Gaze - Things placed in the media for male please, for example women wearing skimpy clothes

Voyeurism - (Freud) erotic pleasure can be gained by looking at a sexual object (preferably when the object is unaware of being watched).

Raunch Culture - Andrea Levy (from her book Female Chaivnist Pigs) makes the argument of raunch culture where women are made to see themselves as objects and see sex as their only source of power.

Female Gaze - a Gaze trope, work is presented as from a female perspective or reflects female attitudes, either because of the creator's gender or because it is deliberately aimed at a female audience. Sweet Tooth by Throwing Shade is an example of female gaze.
Homosexuality - Although lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals are generally indistinguishable from their straight or cisgender counterparts, media depictions of LGBT individuals often represent them as visibly and behaviorally different.

Strong dominant female - a female being the dominant character instead of the stereotypical male.


Stereotypes -

1- 'old image- The burlesque girl' - corsets, feathers, stockings, show hats and accessories.
2- 'the stripper' - Open coach, poles, bra/g-string, bum shot and stripper shoes.
3- 'gansta hoe' - Afro/american, bikini tops/ripped shorts, backward cap, sexual positions and water/oil.

Audience - Uses and gratifications theory

Personal Identification:
I often listen to songs that reflect the mood I am in. I feel it helps me to express myself and take me out of a bad mood. For example when I am feeling angry I like to listen heavy metal as the chaotic music helps me to get a grip and perspective as to why I am angry. I can then listen to more upbeat and feel good music to help pick up my mood. I would often play my music really loud whenever my brother annoyed me in the hope that it would annoy him as well.

Information:
I often listen to educated rappers like 'Tyler the Creator' and 'ScHoolboy Q' who have been described as "lyrical masters of rap and hip hop.". Because they use more educated lyrics and words I have never heard I learn new vocabulary from listening to them.

Entertainment:
Recently one of my favourite groups 'Migos' had a song and dance move go creative and was huge in 2015-2016. The 'dab' was a massive part of 2015-2016 and coming from one of my favourite groups meant that I knew about it before most other people did. Also seeing my friends 'dab' at parties is always entertaining.

Social Interaction:
Me and my friends all like similar music and so when we are together we like to play certain songs that remind us of memories, such as a favourite song from our first festival together. Moreover when I am skating we all often play music, and we share songs with each other, finding that I have a similar music taste to my skating friends allowed me to mix in with the group very easily.

Escapism:
Much like personal identification music provides me with a way to escape how bad my day has been or whatever mood I am in. Often when I am annoyed I like to listen to my favourite songs really loudly and shut the world out.

Companionship:
When me and my friends go for a drive anywhere we like to listen to music to help pass the time of the journey, we also like to show each other new songs we have found. I feel music helps me and my friends to connect and ensures we don't get bored on long journeys.

Audience - How and why do I consume music?

1. How do you consume music?

When?
I like to listen to music as soon as I wake up as I feel it gets me in the mood for the day. I often play music from the speaker in my bedroom when I am getting ready in the morning. I like to listen to fast and upbeat music in the morning to wake me up.

Where?
I often listen to music in my bedroom by myself, or in the car with my friends. However I have been to a few gigs and festivals to listen to my favourite artists.

Who with?
It depends what kind of music I am listening to and when I am listening to it as to wether I listen to the music by myself or with other people. For example, sometimes when I am working at school I like to share my music with my friends, it happens often in Media Studies as I like to show my group the new songs I have found.

How? 
I like to listen to my music on my iPhone using Spotify as it allows me to created different playlists to suit the mood of music I want to listen to. I like to listen to my music when I am doing homework as I feel it helps me to concentrate on what I am doing.

Why?
I find music can calm me down and put me in the right mind frame before I start anything important. When watching your favourite artist live you get huge gratification from the music and you appreciate it more as it feels more 'real'.

30 second breakdown

0-5  The first shot is a male radio presenter introducing the song on the radio for the very first time. It is a hand held shot that is a mid shot, side angled, can see his side profile. Also in greyscale and has an old film effect.

5-14  There is a cut and the camera is clearly resting on the dashboard of a car, can only see a bit of the road which is made visible from the car headlights.

14-19  Camera turns to see the face and torso of the vocalist and the drummer of The Artic Monkeys sitting in the car. It is a mid shot where the camera is resting on the dashboard of the car.

19-22 Hard cut back to the radio presenter, the shot is angled above him, so it is a slight high angle mid shot. Once again also in greyscale and has an old film effect.

22-30 Hard cut back to the vocalist and the drummer. They are pretending to play the drum beat along to the song. It is another mid shot of the two sitting in the car. Which, once again, is shot from the dashboard of the car.

Music, Lyrics and Visuals

We were asked to listen to a song called 'Solsbury Hill' and try to visualise the visuals that went with the song, here were the classes ideas:

My idea was that there were a group of hippies in a field of dandelions and hay bales. All having a good time, drinking and smoking marijuana. The hippies would be wearing tie dye shirts and stereotypical 'hippie' clothing.

The next idea was Mollie's idea, it was about a man in a busy city standing still and a time lapse of people rushing past him. The singer standing alone in the middle of the busy city singing this song.

Another idea was that the video would follow a family in a camper-van on a road-trip. They would be doing adventure activities, such as swimming in lakes and exploring fields.

Lollie's idea was that the video followed a man in an airport. He would be going through the airport trying to find someone he knew and loved. The idea of love stemmed from the lyrics 'my heart was going BOOM BOOM BOOM.'

Music Video Textual Analysis

What Music Means to Me.

When I was younger I grew up listening to Skate Punk, or Soft Rock music. The bands I used to enjoy listening to and remember well were Blink 182 and Sum 41. Two of my favorite songs were Fatlip by Sum 41 and Rock Show by Blink 182. However the main reason I began listening to this genre of music was due to the 'Tony Hawks Pro Skater' game series which were released between 1999-2004, and so they were one of the first games I ever played, and so I remember them well. Which had songs such as BYOB by System of a Down on the game soundtrack, this was the game that got me into Skate Punk music when I was younger.



Growing up one of the most influential songs to me was Green Day's 'American Idiot.'. American Idiot was the very first album I ever bought with my own money, I remember having to ask my mum to get it for me because I was too young to buy it.



 Recently I have got back into skating, and so the music I listen to changed from mainstream artists such as Drake, to older style Punk Rock bands and Metal, such as Of Mice and Men and Bring me The Horizon. This year I went to the Slam Dunk Festival 2016. And there I watched Of Mice and Men perform two of their most popular songs 'Bones Exposed' and 'Would You Still Be There'.

Narrative - Narrative is prevalent in every music video, whether the video has a story to it or not there is always narrative being displayed. James Blunt's video Goodbye My Lover has a narrative of a breakup.
 
Editing - Unlike in films there does not need to be continuity. This music video breaks the 180 degree rule multiple times. Therefore music videos generally don't have to stick to editing rules.
Camera - Camera movements and framing are key features to a music video. This music video is all close up and in the main protagonists face. The music video is by Tove Lo.
Diegesis - creating a world within the music video. Fireflies by Owl City, creates a very dreamy world within the music video where his toys come alive and begin dancing etc.


Carol's main point is that editing plays a huge part in the final music video. For example quick cuts to the beat make the video less boring and more enjoyable for the viewers to watch. 
I looked at System of A Down - Toxicity, and looked at all the cuts it had. In the whole 3:43 I counted around 184 cuts, this matches the hectic nature of heavy metal and the quick cuts reflect the intense heavy nature of the song.

Six Concepts

1. Does the visual match to the lyrics, contradict or amplify the message.
In this song by Macklemore utilises a strange video to match the strange lyrics of the song. He also has a Paris backdrop when he sings about being in Paris, and is in a barber shop when he sings about getting 'The Macklemore Haircut'.

2. Thought Beats. This is seeing the sound of the song.
In Lorde's song Royals, the video cuts when you hear a click.
3. Genre-Related Style and iconography.

In Skepta's video for It Aint Safe, the people in his video dress how typical London gangsters would, and the video is shot at night and is a dark video. This reflects the dark nature of the Grime genre.

4. Multiple Close UP of the main artist or vocalist

In Schoolboy Q's video Banger there are a lot of close up shots of the main artist, which creates a star status for the artist

5. Voyeurism - sexualising the artist to entice the audience.

In Fifth Harmony's song Work from Home, both men and woman are sexualised in this video. 

6. Intertextual References to other media texts.
