Production Diary

20/09/2016 - Today in lesson myself, Harrison and Aaron looked at what song should be our main choice into becoming our music video and what alternatives could be pitch to the group and we could fall on as backup. I believe that we were all keen on using the song 'Rock and Roll' by Eden. Although it is 5 minutes long, we plan to cut it down using whatever tools necessary.

21/09/2016 - Our two songs that we finalised in our group pitch were 'memo' by years and years and 'rock and roll' by Eden. This group pitch was a good insight into what people thought of our song ideas and too hear their constructive criticism. They thought that 'Rock and Roll' was the best choice, also saying that they felt an edgy teen vibe.

23/09/2016- In this session our group came together to see what availability we have. We decided that we can film any day after school but weekends we are all committed in jobs so we probably could only film in mornings.

The second thing that we did was the lip synching task, this was a test to see what one of us fits the best artist to the song. We didn't just looked at the lip synching, we need to fit the artists style as well.

26/09/2016
Today in lesson we brainstormed ideas for shot list. A guide to help us plan for the shots was with the feedback we got from the pitch in class. For example, we thought trying to use a graphic match as a form of cross media synergy would be awesome.

After this we tried to generate a name for our solo artist. The best we could come up with was just Aaron Hunt, Black tape and Glass friends

29/9/2016
Today I have made some significant improvement to the steel-o-matic, a collaboration of inspiring shots that we are considering to include in our music video. These clips that I have collected really suits our music video. For example an outside tracking shots really works and establishes the music video really well. Aaron has completed a couple of risk assessments for our first day out shooting. We have included anything we deemed a hazard.

30/9/2016
Today I completed the steel-o-matic, I feel like I did a really good job with matching the shots I collected with the lyrics. For example, I came up with the idea that we could use dull colours throughout the video, but on the drop we could use an explosion of colour on the drop. This is called 'Leave colour'. Harrison has been brainstorming ideas for shot ideas and locations, harrison feels like it would look much more professional if he created these two mind maps electronically. This is why Harrison started a powerpoint with a couple of mind maps on. He would have created it on microsoft word or emaze, but if we want high marks for creativity we need to use a variety of softwares and be creative in what we do.

4/10/16
Miss said today that we have to email our artist to get their permission for us to use their song for educational purposes. They do not have to reply but for proof we need this. This was interesting because creating a formal email is new to us. After school we went to go film for the first time, this got us very excited because starting filming for a music video is a whole new adventure and experience. Aaron has his own camera, a D3300 Nikon camera and a Jessops tripod. our first location we travelled to Aarons house, a country lane, we mainly took photos for our digipack and social media accounts. However, looking back at the footage we realised that Aarons outfit doesn't match the style and genre of EDEN. So as a group we decided that we should go refilm at the same locations tomorrow.

5/10/16
In the morning, Aaron and myself created the storyboard for todays shoot. We matched some shots to the lyrics and we had the same general plan as yesterday but we have also decided to film at the graffiti wall in Chelmsford, we thought this would be a cool idea and it provides a cool background of colour. It turned out to be great fun , we had such a laugh. We had our first group photo at this location. One of our downfalls as a group is none of us can drive, this means if we want to go to a location it takes a long time. This is why most our time shooting yesterday was on walking.

6/10/16
This afternoon, I started cutting up clips from yesterdays shoot. In hindsight, we saw that Aaron wasn't opening his mouth enough for the lip synching. Harrison being the director should have told Aaron this whilst filming and taken more shots just encase.

After this we have created the front of our digipack. We don't if we will use this for the top of our webpage or digipak.

7/10/16
Before our media lesson today Harrison thought it would be productive to create a small plan for an interview with our artist. It went really well, our style of interview was cool and not plain old boring in an interview room. We filmed on the school film, making sure we only had a green background. It only took us two takes, the flow of the interview went really well, maybe the tone was slightly boring but we kept it on a formal theme. Possibly down the line we could make a second interview where it is funny and we are having a laugh but for now I like what we have created. Aaron has continued with the Digipak research, the Emaze looks smart and very creative. However Harrison feels that we are using too many emazes, we need to develop some level of variety. In addition, I have made three Photoshop pictures. Our font style is called Besom and that is the style of font I believe that we will carry throughout. We had a few ideas for our digipak, we considered drawing parts of it to keep with an indie theme.

10/10/16
When we sat down as a group today, we struggled to figure out what we should write with our storyboards in order to film next time. I just felt that we hit a wall in terms of our production. What we need to do is just sit down, listen to the lyrics and immerse ourselves into the song. I feel that way we will be able to figure out what types of shots we should have. Another thing that we are trying to figure out what sort of narrative we should include in parts where we feel we shouldn't have lip syncing. This was confusing because we had a unanimous decision that we want more than one person in the music video not just Aaron. after this, Harrison sat down and finally uploaded pictures onto Photobucket for our first two shoots. This turned out really well and I am so happy with all of the photography and evidence that Harrison collected. Secondly, Harrison has created our artists fashion mood board, Harrison has collected a few pictures of EDEN and picked his style from them pictures, secondly Harrison incorporated Aaron's style into the mix.

11/10/16
Looking back at the interview footage we realised that the camera kept auto focusing whilst we were filming the interview. This meant that the clips kept going out of focus and the noise was really annoying and it just ruined it completely. This is why today we came to a decision to refilm, I felt that Aaron's outfit suited his style of genre with the denim jacket and the questions flowed much more freely. It was still very formal but in hindsight the questions were structured much better. After this the group decided that we have to crack on with the storyboards, we need to figure out what we should film before we can go to film because we do not want to go out filming but we have no idea what to do. This is the situation that we are in right now.

12/10/16
Before we went for our days shoot, we all achieved tasks that we wanted to complete. Harrison completed the evidence for both day 1 and day 2 of shooting. The technology i used was powerpoint and along with the pictures i evaluated what went well and i also described what we could have done better.

After school we travelled to to several locations to film for our music video and re film. We started off by re filming at the graffiti wall, this was very succesful and we have sorted out the lip synching issues that we were worried about. After this we checked if we could get into this abandoned building to shoot, we were unsuccessful so we are going to call the owners and ask if we could have permission to enter. Overall our filming was very successful and some of the shots look amazing and indie/original which we are aiming for.

13/10/16
Istarted to put together all of the footage we captured from yesterdays shoot. A lot of the footage was very succesful but we realised that the time lapses that we caught were not very good. I think Aaron felt quite embarrassed when he had to stand and look at the traffic for five minutes straight. If I were in his shoes I would have done the same thing.

Whilst I was filtering through the footage, Aaron finished the digipack research, this is good because I am the one in our group delegated to start the digipack and can use this as a direction to help me start it. We need the front cover of our digipack because we are going to incorporate it into our music video. I felt that this was a very productive day and we got things done that we wanted to complete by the end of the week.

17/10/16
Today all of us have been very productive, we are trying to smash through all of the planning and the research that we need to achieve before we go out filming. The deadline for the first draft with all footage is due the week after October half term.

Firstly, I have finished the first draft of the digipack. We wanted to start to create the digipack because we want to include this into our music video as a form of cross media synergy. In addition, we also have an idea about a graphic match with a printed out copy of our digipack, we could try and include this into our video. For example, there will be a close up of the digipack and then a transition into the location of the picture in the close up shown.

What went well?
Harrison has found a good way to adopt an indie theme that revolves around our music video. With inspiration from Bon Iver, we have created some sketches that revolves around the six pictures of our digipack. I feel I have done a really good job executing this and I feel he is the best for this role because I knows how to use Photoshop, the form of software that we are using. This makes me the most productive out of all of us with this.
It is still early days with the digipack and this is the first draft, it may completely change for all we know, we just wanted to get it done so we can include this in our filming, this is due to our filming due in well before our digipack.

Aaron today has created a breakdown of music videos from the clips taken for our steal-o-matic. He wanted to do this because he wanted to talk about why we picked these for our steal o matic and why we thought these went well with our song. I thought this was a good idea because looking back at the steal o matic, we didn't even make an analysis for it.
Secondly, Aaron added to the merchandise ideas by adding a black hoodie to the list, he put 'Iuris' into black font instead of the white themed font that we were going with.
Lastly, Aaron quickly brainstormed ideas for new locations that we can go shoot for media, although small and didn't take a lot of time, this is equally important as everything else.
One reason why this is so important is without the locations, the filming would be rubbish and pointless. We need the good locations because locations really make the music videos what they are.

Today Harrison mainly focused on researching different techniques on transitioning into a next scene. Harrison is researching a lot about transitions because he feels that is what makes music videos, the editing is one of the most important factors so having slick transitions is key to success. This includes, the zoom blur transition, the light leaks and film burn effect, the pass by transition, whip pans and dip to white transition. Harrison has backed all my research up with videos that he has found on YouTube, they are all beneficial and really help you to understand the type of transition. Secondly, he used Gif's to provide a form of evidence and use them to show how we have used these transitions in our music video. The Gif's have turned out really nice and it is really satisfying to see it repeating over and over.

20/10/16
Today was a very successful day of filming, we went to practice our transitions that we researched. We went to the rural location with the stream that we have filmed before. Whilst practising these shots we thought of cool ideas on the spot. For example, using a tree to transition from day to night.

I still feel like we have so much filming to do and we only have one Aaron in our clips so far. We need to fully finish and plan our story boards first to decide whether we need other people in our music videos for fillers.

The other thing that we did today was we contacted the council to enquire about access to an abandoned warehouse near the Essex records office. This did not go well at all because after several attempts into getting to talk to someone, no one knew who we needed to speak to in order to sort it out. so therefore we were unsuccessful.

30/11/2016
Today Aaron and myself finished the second shot with the day and night transition with the tree. They said they captured it well but it is hard to tell until we take it onto the editing software until we can tell whether we framed it correctly or not. In addition, they took a couple of photos which are worthy of the social media accounts and the website.

2/11/2016
We are now seeing some significant improvements to the website, we have been given feedback on how to make it better and we have seen other groups websites and we have taken note on how to improve ours. For example, we have found out how we can spice up the about wall and not leave it boring. In addition we are going to add the iuris sketches to the website, adding our indie touch to it.

Secondly, we are going to add a music and merchandise page to it, this will add quantity and develop our character even more.

4/11/2016
We had a very successful shoot today. We really wanted to film the first establishing shot leading into the lyrics in a really cool location, we found a cool location by the waterfront in Chelmsford. This looked visually beautiful and it went really well. We also filmed a shot that can go straight after the whip pan, a shot of Aaron sitting down signing. This footage was good but it looked to acted, so there is a possibility that we will refilm it.

7/11/16
Today we had a group halfway evaluations in front of all the other groups, although there were a few interruptions, it was really successful and there some valuable feedback that we took that we can add. They spoke about adding our iuris sketch to our digipack, giving it extra effect and they also said it has a 'grungy' look about it. Linking this to the website they said the bright background of Aaron in front of the graffiti doesn't match our black and white theme. This is some useful criticism that we took are going to be helpful and we are going to include this and tweak this into our final designs.

9/11/16
From an idea that we found off the Weekend's video the bed sheet transition went better than thought, the whole idea was to have a transition from two locations from using the same sheet background, We cannot really tell if it was framed well at all until we look at the footage but all in all I feel like it went well.

In addition, we went to the drama studio to film the idea with the CD albums, from what the footage looked like it went well but until we look at it in a post production perspective and match it up with the footage I cant really tell if it goes with the music video. Even though we broke a vintage Hendrix CD album cover it was very successful. Secondly these shots provide a different location and style of lighting than we have been using throughout the video. This style of lighting goes in synergy with our black and white theme with our digipak, costume and website.

10/11/16
In our group meeting we discussed whats priority and whats not, we all came to an agreement that filming is our main concern, the plans that we have we still need to configure and sort out. Along with this Harrison added the footage to the post edit whilst Harrison and Aaron configured and tweaked the website, adding merchandise and the general accessibility and layout of the website.

12/11/16
Today we experimented burning fake money in front of the camera. This was difficult due to the wind but it looked quite interesting and grungy with the dirty brick background behind it. This also could be cool to play around with the reverse feature. This could be really cool and this reversing shot goes in synergy with the other reverse shot with the CD cases.

14/11/16
Aaron made some significant improvements to the merchandise to the website, making the merchandise more realistic and adding more variety, such as black hoodies. We also contributed to blogging, posting first draft response for digipack and social media platforms.

17/11/16
Opportunistic filming came into hand when we found a cool filming location when helping Avenue shooting their smoke bomb scenes. The greenhouse we filmed in was in a derelict brownfield site.

This shooting was all about figuring out different types of filler shots. We got really creative and created a form of lighting refraction with the glass shard in front of the camera. After this we finished the magazine, this looks so accurate and I am really impressed with this. Harrison will need to blog the overall impressions and the comparison between our magazine inspiration and our magazine.

22/11/16
I discovered an idea that leaves some colour to a black and white background in adobe premier edit. I am going to blog this idea, following screenshots, before and after etc. I want to increase more colour as it progresses through the video.

Aaron completed all the necessary risk assessments that we have needed to complete. We need to take these necessary risk assessments incase something does actually happen to us, they make us aware to the hazards.

Lastly, Harrison has finished all the texts and the base of the story boards, Harrison has all the timings and text for them. All we have to do is get Aaron to draw the sketches in each boxes then we can upload these onto the blog with having filmed them.

24/11/16
I have made some serious progress into the leave colour effect, a quarter of our footage has this effect now. In our media lesson, we went to town to reshoot at the waterfront. We wanted to reshoot the end of the whip pans where Aaron is sitting down where he lip sync's "but oh, you could be loved". After this we found a cool location to ply around with a couple of shot styles. We do not know how usable the footage is yet but we really need to get our first draft of a completed music video soon. Even if the footage isn't amazing, we need to fill in the gaps somehow.

28/11/16
As soon as we met up for a group meeting in media, we realised that the day is perfect for some filming. Unfortunately Aaron didn't have his camera so we thought we could use the school cameras in the meantime. The footage we captured looked really good, we thought we could reshoot this tomorrow straight away with the better quality camera.

29/11/16
Today we completed a reshoot with all of the shots that we captured from yesterday. This looked straight away much better than before hand. We can convey a better shot with the quality of our dslr. Secondly, we finally filmed the Sinatra hat transition. I feel really proud because this turned out much better than expected. These were the only set of shots left that we had to capture, now we have enough footage for a completed first draft.

30/11/16
In lesson, I managed to edit all of the clips together in post production and we now have a first draft on youtube for display. We needed to meet the deadline for the first draft so the footage for the chorus will not be kept. For example, the footage of me with the skateboarding is a demonstration of what our footage will look like. This was also filmed with the school cameras, making it look disgusting, with a grainy image. We had to use this footage because we didn't have to time to buy the powder paint before hand. This is why there is a slight anti climax at the guitar drops because we had to just throw the footage together. Soon we will provide a presentation for our first draft so we can receive all of the criticism that we need.

6/12/16
Today we received all the feedback from both music video, digipak and the website. Harrison has already analysed all of the feedback from the digipak, a lot of the feedback was really useful and has already helped us improve our website straight away. Harrison will post on blogger what we have updated to blog soon. Later that day, we went to film both of the choruses. These are the shots that we crucially need into finishing the final draft of the website, this is due to us being so tight on the footage that we have.

9/12/16
I went to town with our actor who will be involved with the powder paint skating. The skater played around with different tricks and different styles of colour and it turned out really well. So the only footage we have to gain is all of the small little fillers we want to include and the completion of the first draft.

13/12/16
When we sat down in class to look at out music video to see what we need to improve and we saw that we still haven't done anything to improve the first drop. With the remaining powder paint and our initial story board idea of the vase, we walked to town to film this shot. We only had one chance to make this count so we wanted to record two angles to make the most of it. We thought it could have gone better because we thought it would shatter more and make more of an effect.

14/12/16
Today was the day where we wanted to re film the phone shots. We have removed this and in replace of these we have used polaroid's. We thought this could suit our genre slightly more and this a good response of our feedback on the phones looking like product placement. Whilst completing this task, we also created a list on what shots we would ideally like to replace for new shots. Working through the list, we have replaced these with new fillers that we have captured from random filming after the polaroid shots. For example, instead of the random shot of me, we have replaced this with a close up of Aaron, we do not have many close ups so to gain variety in shot styles we needed to sort this out.

15/12/16
This is the last day of our production diary, we have finally completed the music video. Including all of the feedback and tweaking it al slightly. The website is finally completed, it is fully functioning with a purpose. We have come a long way as a group and through this journey our experience in this subject has increased highly, learning the ways of a production and management team along with creating a music video.
